Your vehicles can be insured on the following different basis
Comprehensive – As the name suggests this is the widest form of cover as it covers any damages to your vehicles caused by theft, accident and fire. It also covers you if you damage a third-party vehicle or cause an injury to a third party.
Third-Party Fire and Theft – Covers you if you damage a third-party vehicle or cause injury to a third party. It also covers your own vehicles against fire damage, theft, and damage caused during an attempted theft.
Third Party Only – Legally, this is the minimum level of cover you must have to drive on public roads. This will cover you whilst driving vehicles, for damage, loss or injury that you cause to third parties. This is the least expensive level of cover but also the most basic.
Third party car insurance is the minimum level of cover you can take out – it is a legal requirement.
The term ‘third party’ refers to a person involved with a car insurance claim who is not you – (the holder of the policy or the driver). So this is usually the other driver involved in an accident.
A third party car insurance policy ensures that if you cause an accident, any damage to the other person’s vehicle or property will be paid for by your insurer.
However, damage to your vehicle will not be covered, and you will need to pay the bill yourself to get things fixed. You are also unable to make a claim if your car is damaged by fire or stolen.
Prestige Family Fleet motor insurance is a flexible solution for multiple drivers and vehicles on one convenient policy. If your family operate two or more vehicles, specially-tailored family fleet insurance can often provide the most cost-effective protection for all of the family.
Breakdown cover is a type of insurance you take out in case your vehicle breaks down. It’s sometimes also called breakdown and recovery.
Motor legal protection covers your legal expenses for any legal action you may take as the result of an accident.
Motor legal protection covers your legal fees, so you can pay for a solicitor to go after a third party on your behalf. This is usually to help you recover out of pocket expenses that a standard policy will not pay out for. These are also known as uninsured losses. Examples of uninsured losses could include:
Having motor legal protection in place allows you to pursue this without the risk of being even more out of pocket.
Excess protection is an additional cover that is included as standard in some car insurance policies, or can be added on to others for a fee. It basically refunds the excess that you have to pay in a claim where there is no responsible third party.
If you have a classic car then this may need to be insured on a different basis to a normal vehicle. You may need to insure it on the basis of an agreed value and on a limited mileage basis too. Cover can also be arranged on a laid up basis whilst the vehicle is being restored.
