Don’t forget the Travel Insurance!

Summer is coming! A week in the sun? Weekend city break? However you travel, there’s one thing you’ll always need to consider… travel insurance.

Whether you’re squeezing the raincoat into your carry-on for a weekend away or stashing the factor 50 into your suitcase for a bit of sun, there’s one common thing on your to-do list! Arranging a travel insurance policy!

When should I purchase travel insurance?

Don’t wait until you embark on your trip to take out your insurance. The best time to take out a policy, is when you book your holiday.

That doesn’t mean however, that you need to purchase the travel insurance through your holiday provider. But you should organise a suitable policy right away. If something happens that affects your holiday booking prior to the trip, you will be left with the cost, should you have not yet taken out an insurance policy.

What type of travel insurance do I need?

A single use travel insurance policy is purchased to protect a specific holiday that you are going on. If you are somebody who travels often, an annual policy might be more appropriate. This will cover you for any trips that you take during the year (subject to the length of each trip and the conditions of your policy). If you are a frequent traveler, then this can be more cost effective.

However, you must remember to check the locations that your travel insurance covers you to travel to. For example, if you purchase an annual European policy for your regular trips to Spain, and then book a holiday to Canada, you would not be covered under your current policy and would need to increase your cover.

For longer trips, a long-term policy should be purchased. It is important that you have the right insurance in place for the trip that you are taking, otherwise you might not be protected.

What if I have medical conditions?

It is important to declare any medical conditions when arranging your policy. If you fail to declare a condition that then leads you to require medical treatment whilst abroad, you may not be covered and your policy could be voided.

How much will my policy cost?

The cost of travel insurance varies depending on the type of policy, place that you are travelling to and any medical conditions that you need to be covered. You can also tailor your policy to suit your needs. For example, you can add electronics cover for items that may be damaged, broken or stolen. You can also opt for various amounts of medical cover. The limits available may seem very high, but the cost of overseas medical care, particularly in countries such as the United States, can be extremely high.

Do I actually need travel insurance?

Nobody ever thinks that it will happen to them… until it does. There is a whole host of things that could go wrong with your holiday. Taking the risk of a huge bill, on top of the stress of the situation itself, isn’t worth it.
